Human Resource Management (HRM) is the process of recruiting, hiring, deploying and managing employees within an organization. HRM is often referred to simply as human resources (HR). The human resources department of a company or organization is generally responsible for formulating, implementing and supervising employee control policies and organizing relationships with its employees.

History Of HRM ...

The earliest idea of the field of human resources originated in Europe in the 19th century. It was built on a simple idea by Robert Owen (1771-1858) and Charles Babbage (1791-1871) during the Industrial Revolution. These people concluded that individuals are crucial to the success of an organization. (managementstudyguide.com)

Father Of  Human Resource Management...

George Elton Mayo
26 December 1880 - 7 September 1949

George Elton Mayo is considered as father of human resource management. He was born in Adelaide, South Australia on 26 December 1880 and died in Guildford, Surrey on 1 September 1949.(wikipedia.org)

Between 1924 and 1927 Mayo went on to make his most famous experiments at the Hawthorne Works of the General Electric Company in Chicago. He conducted further research to find out what effect fatigue and monotony have on job productivity and how to control them through various rest breaks. , Working hours, temperature and humidity.

Mayo's major contribution to human resource management is discussed below.

1. Human Relations Approach:

He recognized the importance of man in management. He said that man is a complex and influential input for organizational performance. The social and psychological needs of human beings cannot be ignored if management wants to increase productivity.

2. Non-Economic Awards:

It was previously assumed that more work would be done if workers were given more cash incentives (F.W.Taylor). Elton Mayo said the technicalities of economic incentives were not only inadequate but also unrealistic. He was able to show that humane and respectful treatment, participation and a sense of entitlement, acceptance, morale, human dignity and social interaction are sometimes more important than pure money Reward.

3. Social man:

Mayo developed the concept of 'social man'. He said that man is primarily driven by social needs and gains a sense of his own identity by interacting with others. He responds to the social forces of the informal group rather than management incentives and controls. He also linked productivity to a social phenomenon.

4. Organization as a social system:

Mayo was of the opinion that informal relationships within the organization were more effective than formal relationships. People form informal groups and seek guidance to bend to their emotions and to act from such groups.(managementstudyguide.com)

Whatever the definition, we ask "What is HRM?" Let's use the answer to the question "It’s all about the people in the organizations". In 21st century organizations, the human resource manager or personal manager is no longer considered a person who cares about the activities that are traditionally described. In fact, many organizations have different departments dealing with staffing, payroll, and retention. Instead, the HR manager is responsible for managing employee expectations relative to management objectives and reconciling both to ensure employee performance and management goals are achieved.(linkedin.com)
