When an employee reports to work, his attitude affects his performance and can have an impact on the employee morale around him. In general, employees with good attitudes tend to have stronger performance, while employees with weaker attitudes tend to perform less than high achievers. Managers are responsible for monitoring employee attitudes and resolving attitude issues such as negativity and boredom.

The attitude of an employee

Attitude is based on many factors that bring an employee into the workplace. It is difficult to change the deep roots of an employee’s attitude. Their attitude is a result of her upbringing, including the thought patterns they have learned over the years from peers, parents, teachers, coaches, and other adults, and how they look at the world.

Influence of attitudes

The employee's attitude has the potential to influence his interactions with others and their individual performance. Attitude affects the employee response, including from colleagues, supervisors, and clients. According to Performance Magazine, attitude affects his perception of his job and his value to the organization. If an employee's work involves collaborating with others, his attitude can affect the success or failure of the team.

Signs of a weak attitude

Some signs of employee negativity include thinking all or nothing, over-generalizing and labeling, personalizing and blaming, jumping to conclusions, and focusing on the negative. These signs are examples of thinking patterns that affect an employee's work and her social interactions with others in the workplace. When a manager observes negative thinking patterns in a team situation, he can ask himself what kind of thinking affects each employee. He can help team members test their attitudes to focus on positive thinking.

Role of management

Managers can assess whether an employee's poor performance reflects an attitude problem or  factors such as employee attitudes and job satisfaction, incapability to handle work tasks, training needs, problems with the work environment, or personal issues. Upon closer inspection, managers may find that a combination of these or other factors makes an employee struggle with performance. Therefore, it is important to approach the employee's performance issues with caution, as they may or may not be related to his attitude. This conversation can reveal his understanding of why an employee is struggling.

Positive Attitudes and Job Performance

Managers should encourage and identify employees with positive attitudes and satisfactory or above-average performance. These employees contribute to a positive workplace and have a positive impact on workplace morale. Negative attitudes or poor performance often goes unnoticed because a manager demands more time. Recognition strengthens their positive qualities and promotes continued success.
